Relative to other prestigious annual film festivals, NYFF typically operates — like due to its situation within the calendar year — as more of a curative experience than earlier events, collecting together the best of the year’s festival circuit according to its programming team. NYFF also, of course, pairs this assemblage with a handful of high-profile premieres, and voila. 2021’s edition falls very much in line with this familiar strategy, with highlights from Berlin, Cannes, Venice, and elsewhere populating the Main Slate. This also means that InRO had already written on a true bevy of the fest’s programmed titles, including 21 of the Main Slate films and a total of 35 overall. There’s still plenty we’ll be tackling across the next couple of weeks, including finishing up the rest of the Main Slate, but we’ve given ourselves a bit of breathing room this year. In the meantime, you can read our thoughts on the 35 films we’ve already covered — yes, every one of them, if you’d please — and we’ll be back later this week with our first dispatch of new content, including thoughts on some of the fest’s biggest premieres.
