After a rich and varied March release landscape, April came back down to Earth a bit. There were still exciting, under-the-radar releases (Gazer, Henry Fonda for President, The Code, Invention)and a few high-profile studio flicks that actually delivered the good (Sinners, Warfare), but the month was also bursting with a lot of filler and mixed results. It was simply a lot of ebb and flow: Cronenberg was back, yes, and winning, but also hitting megaplexes was A Minecraft Movie, which begat Lord of the Flies-esque viewing experiences that likely led to a few theater staffer resignations. Elsewhere, Disneynature released it’s latest Earth Day doc, to perhaps the littlest fanfare yet (remember when the likes of these were near-Event releases?), while Shudder delivered the best Snow White film of the year, a mere month after Disney dropped theirs into theaters, presumably with one eye already shut. With Cannes on the horizon — as well as M:I 8 — most of us are indeed probably already done with April in our minds, but we don’t take months off and so dug into 50 of the April’s notable releases (okay, it was only 49…) to help guide your viewing.
