The northern city of Recife, Brazil, enjoyed something of a renaissance last year with the success of Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent. Garnering more attention than any of his previous films, this tale of political history at risk of disappearance shone a light on a vibrant if occasionally neglected city. At Locarno this year, filmmakers Matheus Farias and Enock Carvalho attempt to add to Recife’s recent cinematic cred with The Riverbank.
